Hey again y'all!
I thought I would take a moment and talk about the new character profile illustrations that you can now find on the Character Profile page.
First and foremost, I do not consider myself a "writer", though I do enjoy writing. I am, however, an artist with a degree in studio arts and technical theater. Currently, I am pursuing my masters in painting. So when Jason suggested the idea of adding artwork to our story, I was more than gun-ho!
Because I am a big fan of letting the reader form their own mental image of the characters in a book or play, I decided it would be best to keep the characters more illustrative in design rather than portray them more realistically. As I started with Sophia, I was reading Jason's description of her: I decided after a rough pencil sketch that going into extreme depth with her profile would deplete from the mysticism she seems to emit for me.
Ink and watercolor seemed to be a perfect solution. Getting hung up on each character was the last thing I wanted to fall under- it is a familiar trap that would paralyze my pen from being able to commit to each character's look. Thus, each picture is drawn immediately after reading character descriptions provided by Jason.. (For right now, all shown characters are his creation. Mine such as Saiyune and Nefron will be coming soon.) Furthermore, each small painting is completed in roughly five to ten minutes each.
As if giving the viewer an "easter egg" if you will, I based two of the character's looks after Jason and myself. After seeing Jason for the first time whether webcam and social media, I was captured by his distinct facial features and facial bone structure. Slightly narrow with a strong jaw and prominent nose, Seth seemed to resemble Jason in my mind as I drew him. Seth in himself is an interesting character, so it seemed like a nice tribute to my fellow writer.
As for the other, it was an accident. Jason brought me onto Dragon Children way back in the day when it was an rpg because it needed something I had made a reputation for playing: the villain. Pandora is still a character I hold near and dear because I do love to play evil....so there is some resemblance between us. ;)
Alas, reader, I must return to the sketchbook. Until then!
